Appearance of Lord Caitanya-Nov 1969

Appearance of Lord Caitanya

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krsna Consciousness

[The following is from a lecture at London's Conway Hall in November, 1969.]

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the golden avatara, appeared in India nearly five hundred years ago. It is the custom in India that when a child is born, an astrologer is called for. When Lord Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, appeared five thousand years ago, Gargamuni was called by His father, and he said, "This child formerly incarnated in three complexions, such as red and golden, and now He has appeared in blackish color." Krsna's color is described in the scriptures as blackish, just like the color of a cloud. Lord Caitanya is understood to be Krsna appearing in golden complexion.

There is much evidence in Vedic literature that Caitanya Mahaprabhu is an incarnation of Krsna, and this is confirmed by scholars and devotees. In the Srimad-Bhagavatam it is confirmed that the incarnation of Krsna, or God, in this present age, Kali-yuga, will always engage in describing Krsna. He is Krsna, but as a devotee of Krsna He describes Himself. And in this age His bodily complexion will not be blackish. This means that it may be white, it may be red, or it may be yellow, because these four colors -- white, red, yellow, and black -- are the colors assumed by the incarnations for the different ages. Therefore, since the red, white, and blackish colors were already taken by former incarnations, the remaining color, golden, is assumed by Caitanya Mahaprabhu. His complexion is not blackish, but He is Krsna.

Another feature of this avatara is that He is always accompanied by His associates. In the picture of Caitanya Mahaprabhu one will find that He is always followed by many devotees chanting. Whenever God incarnates He has two missions, as stated in the Bhagavad-gita. There Krsna says, "Whenever I appear, My mission is to deliver the pious devotees and to annihilate the demons." When Krsna appeared, He had to kill many demons. If we see a picture of Visnu, we will notice that He has a conchshell, lotus flower, club, and disc. These last two items are meant for killing demons. Within this world there are two classes of men -- the demons and the devotees. The devotees are called demigods; they are almost like God because they have godly qualities. Those who are devotees are called godly persons, and those who are non-devotees, atheists, are called demons. So Krsna, or God, comes with two missions: to give protection to the devotees and to destroy the demons. In this age Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission is also like that: to deliver the devotees and to annihilate the non-devotees, the demons. But in this age He has a different weapon. That weapon is not a club or disc or lethal weapon -- His weapon is the sankirtana movement. He killed the demoniac mentality of the people by introducing the sankirtana movement. That is the specific significance of Lord Caitanya. In this age people are already killing themselves. They have discovered atomic weapons with which to kill themselves, so there is no need for God to kill them. But He appeared to kill their demonic mentality. That is possible by this Krsna consciousness movement.

Therefore, in the Srimad-Bhagavatam it is said that this is the incarnation of God in this age. And who worships Him? The process is very simple. Just keep a picture of Lord Caitanya with His associates. Lord Caitanya is in the middle, accompanied by His principal associates -- Nityananda, Advaita, Gadadhara, and Srivasa. One simply has to keep this picture. One can keep it anywhere. It is not that one has to come to us to see this picture. Anyone can have this picture in his home, chant this Hare Krsna mantra, and thus worship Lord Caitanya. That is the simple method. But who will capture this simple method? Those who have good brains. Without much bother, if one simply keeps a picture of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu at home and chants Hare Krsna, then one will realize God. Anyone can adopt this simple method. There is no expenditure, there is no tax, nor is there any need to build a very big church or temple. Anyone, anywhere, can sit down on the road or beneath a tree and chant the Hare Krsna mantra and worship God. Therefore it is a great opportunity. For example, in business or political life one sometimes finds a great opportunity. Those who are intelligent politicians take a good opportunity and make a success of it the first time it comes. Similarly, in this age, those who have sufficient intelligence take to this sankirtana movement, and they advance very quickly.

Lord Caitanya is called "the golden avatara." Avatara means "descending, coming down." Just as one may come down from the fifth story or the one-hundredth story of a building, an avatara comes down from the spiritual planets in the spiritual sky. The sky we see with our naked eyes or with a telescope is only the material sky. But beyond this there is another sky, which is not possible to see with our eyes or instruments. That information is in the Bhagavad-gita: it is not imagination. Krsna says that beyond the material sky is another sky, the spiritual sky.

We have to take Krsna's word as it is. For example, we teach small children that beyond England there are other places, called Germany, India, etc., and the child has to learn about these places from the version of the teacher because they are beyond this sphere. Similarly, beyond this material sky there is another sky. One cannot experiment to find it, any more than a small child can experiment to find Germany or India. That is not possible. If we want to get knowledge, then we have to accept authority. Similarly, if we want to know what is beyond the material world then we have to accept the Vedic authority, otherwise there is no possibility of knowing. It is beyond material knowledge. One cannot go to the far planets in this universe, what to speak of going beyond this universe. The estimation is that in order to go to the highest planet of this universe with modern machinery one would have to travel for forty thousand light-years. So we cannot ever travel within this material sky. Our lifetime and means are so limited that we cannot have proper knowledge of even this material world.

In the Bhagavad-gita, when Arjuna asked Krsna, "Will you kindly explain the extent to which Your energies are working?" the Supreme Lord gave him so many instances, and at the end He finally said, "My dear Arjuna, what shall I explain about My energies? It is not actually possible for you to understand. But you can just imagine the expansion of My energies: this material world, which consists of millions of universes, is a display of only one fourth of My creation." We cannot estimate the position of even one universe, and there are millions of spiritual planets. All this information is available from the Vedic literature. If one accepts Vedic literature, then he can get this knowledge. If one doesn't accept it, there is no other means. That is our choice. Therefore, according to Vedic civilization, whenever an acarya speaks he immediately gives references from the Vedic literature. Then others will accept it: "Yes, it is correct." In a law court the lawyer gives references from past judgments of the court, and if his case is tight, the judge accepts. Similarly, if one can give evidence from the Vedas, then it is understood that his position is factual.

The avatara for this age, Lord Caitanya, is described in Vedic literature. We cannot accept anyone as an avatara unless he has the symptoms described in the scriptures. We do not whimsically accept Lord Caitanya as an avatara on the basis of votes. Nowadays it has become a fashion that any man can come and say that he is God or an incarnation of God, and some fools and rascals will accept it: "Oh, he is God." We do not accept an avatara like that. We take evidence from the Vedas. An avatara must conform to descriptions in the Vedas. Then we accept him; otherwise no. For each avatara there is a description in the Vedas: He will appear at such and such a place, in such and such a form, and He will act like this. That is the nature of Vedic evidence.

In the Srimad-Bhagavatam there is a list of the avataras, and there is mention of Lord Buddha's name. This Srimad-Bhagavatam was written five thousand years ago, and it mentions different names for future times. It says that in the future the Lord would appear as Lord Buddha, his mother's name would be Anjana, and he would appear in Gaya. So Buddha appeared twenty-six hundred years ago, and the Srimad-Bhagavatam, which was written five thousand years ago, mentioned that in the future he would appear. Similarly, there is mention of Lord Caitanya, and similarly the last avatara of this Kali-yuga is also mentioned in the Bhagavatam. It is mentioned that the last incarnation in this age is Kalki. He will appear as the son of a brahmana whose name is Visnu-yasa, in a place called Sambhala. There is a place in India with that name, so perhaps it is there that the Lord will appear.

So an avatara must conform to the descriptions in the Upanisads, Srimad-Bhagavatam, Mahabharata, other Vedic literatures. And on the authority of Vedic literature and the commentary of great, stalwart gosvamis like Jiva Gosvami, who was the greatest scholar and philosopher in the world, we can accept Lord Caitanya as an incarnation of Krsna.

Why did Lord Caitanya appear? In the Bhagavad-gita Lord Krsna says, "Give up all other engagements and simply engage in My service. I will give you protection from all results of sinful actions." In this material world, in conditional life, we are simply creating sinful reactions. That's all. And because of sinful reactions, we have received this body. If our sinful reactions stopped we would not have to take a material body; we should get a spiritual body.

What is a spiritual body? A spiritual body is a body which is free from death, birth, disease, and old age. It is an eternal body, full of knowledge and bliss. Different bodies are created by different desires. As long as we have desires for different kinds of enjoyment, we have to accept different kinds of material bodies. Krsna, God, is so kind that He awards whatever we want. If we want a tiger's body, with tiger-like strength and teeth with which to capture animals and suck fresh blood, then Krsna will give us the opportunity. And if we want the body of a saintly person, a devotee engaged only in the service of the Lord, then He will give us that body. This is stated in the Bhagavad-gita.

If a person engaged in yoga, the process of self-realization, somehow or other fails to complete the process, he is given another chance; he is given birth in a family of a pure brahmana or a rich man. If one is fortunate enough to take birth in such a family, he gets all facilities to understand the importance of self-realization. From the very beginning of life our Krsna conscious children are getting the opportunity to learn how to chant and dance, so when they are grown up they will not change, but instead will automatically make progress. They are very fortunate. Regardless of whether he is born in America or Europe, a child will advance if his father and mother are devotees. He gets this opportunity, if a child takes birth in a family of devotees. This means that in his last life he had already taken to the yoga process, but somehow or other he could not finish it. Therefore the child is given another opportunity to make progress under the care of a good father and mother so that he will again advance. In this way, as soon as one completes his development of God consciousness, then he no longer has to take birth in this material world, but returns to the spiritual world.

Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita: "My dear Arjuna, if one understands My appearance, disappearance, and activities, simply because of this understanding he is given the opportunity to take birth in the spiritual world after giving up this body." One has to give up this body -- today, tomorrow, or maybe the day after that. One has to. But a person who has understood Krsna will not have to take another material body. He goes directly to the spiritual world and takes birth in one of the spiritual planets. So Krsna says that as soon as one gets this body -- it doesn't matter if it is from India or the moon or the sun or Brahmaloka or anywhere within this material world -- one should know that it is due to his sinful activities. There are degrees of sinful activities, so according to the degree of sinfulness, one takes a material body. Therefore our real problem is not how to eat, sleep, mate, and defend -- our real problem is how to get a body that is not material but spiritual. That is the ultimate solution to all problems. So Krsna guarantees that if one surrenders unto Him, if one becomes fully Krsna conscious, then He will give one protection from all reactions to sinful life. This assurance was given by Krsna in the Bhagavad-gita, but there were many fools who could not understand Krsna. In the Bhagavad-gita they are described
as mudhas. Mudha means "rascal," and Krsna says in the Gita, "They do not know what I actually am." So many people misunderstood Krsna. Although Krsna gave us this message of the Bhagavad-gita so that we could understand Him, many people missed the opportunity. Therefore, Krsna, out of His compassion, came again, as a devotee, and showed us how to surrender unto Krsna. Krsna Himself came to teach us how to surrender. His last instruction in the Bhagavad-gita is to surrender, but people -- mudhas, rascals -- said, "Why should I surrender?" Therefore, although Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krsna Himself, this time He teaches us practically how to execute the mission of the Bhagavad-gita. That's all. Caitanya Mahaprabhu is teaching nothing extraordinary, nothing beyond the process of surrendering to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, which was already taught in the Bhagavad-gita. There is no other teaching, but the same teaching in presented in different ways so that different kinds of people may take it and take the opportunity to approach God.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu gives us the opportunity to reach God directly. When Rupa Gosvami, the principal disciple of Lord Caitanya, first saw Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he was a minister in the government of Bengal but wanted to join Caitanya Mahaprabhu's movement. So he gave up his position as a minister, and after joining, when he surrendered, he offered a nice prayer to Lord Caitanya. This prayer says:

namo maha-vadanyaya
krsna-prema-pradaya te
krsnaya krsna-caitanya
namne gaura-tvise namah

"My dear Lord, you are the most munificent of all the incarnations." Why? Krsna-prema-pradaya te: "You are directly giving love of God. You have no other purpose. Your process is so nice that one can immediately learn to love God. Therefore You are the most munificent of all incarnations. And it is no possible for any personality other than Krsna Himself to deliver this benediction; therefore I say that You are Krsna." Krsnaya krsna-caitanya-namne: "You are Krsna, but You have assumed the name Krsna Caitanya. I surrender unto You."

So this is the process. Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krsna Himself, and He is teaching how to develop love of God by a very simple method. He says simply to chant Hare Krsna.

harer nama harer nama

harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva
nasty eva gatir anyatha

"In this age, simply go on chanting the Hare Krsna mantra. There is no other alternative." People are embarrassed by so many methods of realization. They cannot take to the actual ritualistic processes of meditation or yoga; it is not possible. Therefore Lord Caitanya says that if one takes up this process of chanting, then immediately he can reach the platform of realization.

The chanting process offered by Lord Caitanya for achieving love of God is
called sankirtana. Sankirtana is a Sanskrit word. Sam means samyak-- "complete." And kirtana means "glorifying" or "describing." So complete description means complete glorification of the Supreme, or the Supreme Complete Whole. It is not that one can describe anything or glorify anything and that will be kirtana. From the grammatical point of view that may be kirtana, but according to the Vedic system, kirtana means describing the supreme authority, the Absolute Truth, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is called kirtana.

This devotional service begins with the method of sravana. Sravana means "hearing," and kirtana means "describing." One should describe, and another should hear. Or the same man himself can both describe and hear. He does not need anyone else's help. When we chant Hare Krsna, we chant and hear. This is complete. This is a complete method. But what is that chanting and hearing? One must chant and hear about Visnu, Krsna. Not of anything else. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh: one can understand Visnu, the all-pervading Absolute Truth, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, by the method of hearing.

We have to hear; if one simply hears, that is the beginning. One does not need any education or development of material knowledge. Just like a child: as soon as he hears, immediately he can respond and dance. So by nature God has given us these nice instruments -- ears -- so that we can hear. But we must hear from the right source. That is stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. One must hear from those who are devoted to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. They are called satam. If one hears from the right source, from a realized soul, then it will act. And these words of God, or Krsna, are very relishable. If one is intelligent enough, he will listen to what is spoken by the realized soul. Then very soon he will be released from material entanglements.

ShaktaveshAvatara

Srila Prabhupada is ShaktyAveshAvatara. [Sometimes spelled differently, but similar enough to recognize. I tried to write it phonetically so everyone can read it.]

Devotees have asked both myself, husband, also our godsiblings, for evidence

Rightly so. They did not necessarily disbelieve - not at all. They believed - but sometimes it was almost like holding onto a blind hope, rather than having scriptural facts.

Thus below are some emails with quotes complied by my husband. Which of course makes the comments that follow the quotes, his.

Subject: Here is sastra evidence that Srila Prabhupada is Saktavesh

"As far as Avesarupa is concerned, sometimes Krishna empowers some suitable living entity to represent Him; when a living entity is acting as a representative of the Supreme Lord, he is called Avesa avatar, or Saktavesh avatara." TLC

This means that when Krishna empowers a jiva to represent Him, then that person is saktavesh avatara. The following quotes prove that Srila Prabhupada is indeed that sakatavesh avatara, who was empowered by Lord Krishna to do extraordinary service, never done before in Vaisnava history, and can never be duplicated again, for that matter.

Here Srila Prabhupada explains how he was empowered by Lord Caitanya to fulfill His prophesy-

"So my dear boys and girls, about six years ago I came to your country single-handed, with this pair of cymbals. Now you are so many chanting Hare Krsna. That is my success. It was the prediction of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu:

prthivite ache yata nagaradi grama
sarvatra pracara hoibe mora nama
(Caitanya-bhagavata, Antya 4.126)

Lord Caitanya desired that "In all the towns, in as many towns and villages as there are on the surface of the globe, My name will be broadcast." He is Krsna Himself, svayam krsna, krsna caitanya-namine, simply changing His name as Krsna Caitanya. So His prediction will never go in vain. That's a fact. So my plan was that "I shall go to America. America is the leading country of the world. If I can convince (the) younger generation of America, they will take up. …. If you kindly take this Krsna consciousness movement seriously, your country will be saved, and the whole world will be saved." Arrival Lecture -- Los Angeles, May 18, 1972

The following quotes show how Srila Bhaktivinoda started this movement, and how he predicted a great soul to spread it all over the world-

Prabhupada: He sent his first book...
Ambassador: Yes.
Prabhupada: ...in 1896. Bhaktivinoda Thakura was the first origin of this movement. But he simply thought of it. And he was expecting some others that willing to take up the work. Well, somebody says that I am the same man. - Room Conversation with Canadian Ambassador to Iran -- March 13, 1975, Iran

Around the turn of the century, the great spiritual master Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura made this prediction- "Soon there will appear a personality who will preach the holy name of Hari [Lord Krsna] all over the world."

More proof-

"Without being empowered by the direct potency of Lord Krsna to fulfill His desire and without being specifically favored by the Lord, no human being can become the spiritual master of the whole world. …. Only an empowered personality can distribute the holy name of the Lord and enjoin all fallen souls to worship Krsna. By distributing the holy name of the Lord, he cleanses the hearts of the most fallen people; therefore he extinguishes the blazing fire of the material world. Not only that, he broadcasts the shining brightness of Krsna's effulgence throughout the world. Such an acarya, or spiritual master, should be considered nondifferent from Krsna -- that is, he should be considered the incarnation of Lord Krsna's potency. Such a personality is krsnalingita-vigraha -- that is, he is always embraced by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna. Such a person is above the considerations of the varnasrama institution. He is the guru, or spiritual master, for the entire world, a devotee on the topmost platform, the maha-bhagavata stage, and a paramahamsa-thakura, a spiritual form only fit to be addressed as paramahamsa or thakura." Madhya 25.9P

"By the grace of Lord Sri Krsna, we had the chance of being born in a Vaisnava family, and in our childhood we imitated the worship of Lord Krsna by imitating our father….. Our spiritual master, who also took his birth in a Vaisnava family, got all inspirations from his great Vaisnava father Thakura Bhaktivinoda….. there is always symmetry between the early lives of all great devotees of the Lord….. Such maha-bhagavatas are called nitya-siddhas, or souls liberated from birth." Ref. VedaBase =Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.3.15 -- Los Angeles, June 1, 1972

"The Krsna consciousness movement is spreading to enlighten people about their real position, their original relationship with Krsna. One requires Krsna's special power in order to be able to do this…. The Lord again comes as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to induce people to take to Krsna consciousness. The Lord also empowers a special devotee to teach people their constitutional position." Madhya 19.114

I think that anyone who reads the above very carefully will agree with the thesis. Please inform if I made any mistakes here, thanks for following the Vaisnava protocol, ys Bdas

Subject: MORE to show Prabhupada is avatar

Haribol,

The paragraphs below are from the essay "Great Souls Sometimes Reappear," which appeared on several websites. This is more evidence that Srila Prabhupada is a unique saktavesa avatar sent by Lord Caitanya.

Sdas asked if there will be anymore jiva empowered avatars to come. By reading all these predictions we surmise that there are no more empowered jiva avatars to come, or else there would be similar predictions to herald their soon arrival. Srila Prabhupada already fulfilled these predictions, there are no more similar predictions to come.

Ydas also asked what class of avatar. Prabhupada is in a unique class of empowered jivas, which is evident from the predictions he made come true, such as Bhakti personified coming to the west. Just like King Prthu was an empowered jiva, and did amazing things, also Srila Prabhupada is another glorious chapter of Srimad Bhagavatam.

Several websites ran this "great souls" essay, but the VNN site refused to run it, even though they ran many other essays submitted by me.

I think this is because they are mostly GM, [Gaudiya Math] oriented, and it seems they don't wholeheartedly agree with the conclusion of this essay, which confirms that Srila Prabhupada is a unique acharya, specially empowered by Lord Krsna, as said in the last paragraph here, "we should never even slightly think that Srila Prabhupada was just another guru, but we should be firm in conviction, from sastra, that he is the sena-pati great general of Lord Caitanya’s sankirtan movement, sent by Lord Caitanya Himself, that he is jagat guru of the world, and he was sent to the western world by bhakti personified, as said in the Bhagavat Mahatmya."

I feel they don't want to make such distinction, otherwise, why would they not run the article, when many other devotees liked it?

So, should the disciples of Srila Prabhupada always glorify him in all times, and in all forms of words? Yes, Srila Prabhupada's glories should always be sung by poets and all devotees of Krsna, perpetually every day, [this is done in guru puja every day] every year, every century, for all times for the great contribution and service he rendered to Lord Krsna. Hare Krishna, ys Bdasa

From essay-

Lord Caitanya sends his great devotee, Srila Prabhupada- Lochan Das Thakur, in his Chaitanya Mangal, predicted that a sena-pati, or a "great general," would come and accomplish this mission. This was Srila Prabhupada. Also, Bhaktivinode Thakur, in an article entitled "Nityananda Suryodoy," which was published in the 1800s, in his Sajjana-toshani magazine -- he predicted that soon a time is coming when the chanting of Krishna's name will be heard in England, France, Russia, Germany, and America. Srila Prabhupada brought this to fruition. There is also one document from the fifteenth century. It is called the Bhagavat Mahatmya. In this book, Narada, the great sage, has a conversation with bhakti personified. In the course of this conversation, bhakti says, idam sthanam parityajya videsham gamyate maya. Literally, this means: "I will leave this country, India, and go abroad!" The same text informs us that this personified bhakti will go to South India and then leave to go abroad after staying in Vrindavan. This is exactly what Prabhupada did." Ref. VedaBase = OS 6: Chapter Six

Here we have sastra authority that Srila Prabhupada was directly sent to this world by Lord Caitanya, and Srila Prabhupada was Lord Caitanya’s sena-pati great general. Also, in the Brahma-vivarta Purana, Lord Vishnu told Mother Ganges to not worry about the many sins of Kali-Yuga, because He will send His devotee to spread the sankritan movement all over the world. Srila Prabhupada told his disciples, “never was there a time when I did not know Krishna.”

We should press upon all new devotees the extreme importance of never entertaining the thought that the great acharyas in our parampara are like ordinary human beings. Such an offensive mentality is described as naraka, or hellish.

And we should never even slightly think that Srila Prabhupada was just another guru, but we should be firm in conviction, from sastra, that he is the sena-pati great general of Lord Caitanya’s sankirtan movement, sent by Lord Caitanya Himself, that he is jagat guru of the world, and he was sent to the western world by bhakti personified, as said in the Bhagavat Mahatmya.

It is the duty of all devotees who follow in Srila Prabhupada’s legacy to inform everyone of Srila Prabhupada’s exalted status of founder-acharya and Lord Caitanya’s sena-pati great general guru for everyone in his movement.

A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada – Lord Chaitanya’s Senapati (Chief-Commander) Bhakta

Locana Dasa Thakura in his Caitanya Mangala (Sutra-khanda) mentions Srila Prabhupada (Lord Caitanya speaking of the reasons for His descent):

nama-guna-sankirtana vaisnavera shakti
prakasa karibe ami nija prema-bhakti

Chanting of the name & qualities of Krsna is the life & energy of the Vaisnavas. I will reveal these activities & rejuvenate pure devotional service unto Myself.

ei mate kali-papa karibe sanhara
sabe cala age pache na kara vichara

In this way I will destroy all the sins in Kali Yuga. So all of you, My associates, go ahead and take birth on the earthly planet before My advent and don't remain behind.

ebe nama sankirtana tikshna khadaga laiya
antara asura jivera phelibe katiya

Taking the sharp sword of the congregational chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra, (nama-sankirtana) I will root out & destroy the demoniac mentality in the hearts of all the conditioned souls.

yadi papi chadi dharma dure dese yaya
mora senapati-bhakta yaibe tathaya

If some sinful people escape and giving up religious principles go to far off countries, then my Senapati Bhakta will come at that time to give them Krsna consciousness. (senapati - a military field commander, bhakta - a devotee. Lord Caitanya will empower His own devotee to spread Krsna Consciousness around the world.)

"A living entity who is specifically empowered by the Lord with knowledge or strength is technically called avesa-rupa. As stated in Caitanya-caritamrta (Antya 7.11), krsna-sakti vina nahe tara pravartana: unless a devotee is specifically empowered by the Lord, he cannot peach the holyname ofthe Lord all over the world. This is an explanation of the word avesa-rupa." ~ CC Madya Lila, Ch 20 P

My Egroups

A reason I opened this blog resulted from yahoo web page  hosting improperly transferring my geocites sites, then shutting me down since my pages looked improper. :) [Basically they messed up my onsite pics, then blamed me for not having pics.] Even tho I paid. Anyhow, in time I hope to relocate backups and will then start making those pages again.

Have so far located most of my former sites, and transferred two. Scroll to see which ones.

UPDATE: Now yahoo has closed all egroups, therefore I have modified this blog post. There are still interesting sites, plus a group or two! :)

[Written by Srila Prabhupada himself] A document, plus its amendment, deemed extremely important by Srila Prabhupada. Yet, why no one follows it? Why no one even wants to talk about it? Unless they can talk it "away." Cover it over with lots of long sentences. Whereas, IMHO, Prabhupada said it, then I for one, believe it.

* Devotees CAN go Back To Godhead
This arose after I heard devotees I knew had died under auspicious circumstances, certain others spoke as if they had not achieved the goal of returning to Krishna. That is the exact opposite of what Prabhupada teachers. If we chant at the time of death, or die in Vrindavana for example, we go back to home, back to Godhead. Yet upon the death of an 11 or 12 years old child who others heard him chanting as he left this world, we were informed he did not go back. And upon the death of others who some may judge should not to have gone back, but they were factually chanting or passed over in the Holy Dham, then they had to have returned to the Lord. This needs to be better understood. Thus:

* Qualifications Of Dksha [Initiating] IGuru
What you do, or who you select, to save your soul, is of course your own individual choice. Simply, do it from a perspective of knowledge. Can you answer: "How does one recognize who is a pure guru?" Do you know: "What are the specified shastric qualifications of guru?" Or "What did Prabhupada say to help one recognize a qualified spiritual master?" Lets not jump on the vox-populi bus, that since everyone is jumping up and down happily dancing or promoting someone, or evaluating by how they feel, then we blindly go along. Instead, let us educate ourselves. Yes, feelings have their place, but so does knowledge. For the answers to the above questions, and more, please read the following link.

Qualifications Of Diksha [Initiating] Guru

(UPDATE: Looking at the originally posted blog date, even I am startled to come across the same misunderstanding many years later. Recently - July 2018 - someone who felt they are self knowledgeable, yet inquired about guru since theirs fell down. So I asked, 'what qualifications they need to look for in guru?' Their reply? The 4 regs, 16 rounds - finally added a few more but did not apply to guruship.  Oh Dear sweet, innocent Prabhu's, those are merely the qualifications for the disciple. According to our own shastra, there is much more required for diksha / initiating guru position. Please deeply study this specific topic before making your lifetime commitment. That choice is indeed up to you, but do it based in real knowledge, not on blind following.)

 GURU:

Who should we bow down to offer our obeisances as worshipable spiritual master? Who can give us God?

Having asked many new devotees: "What are the qualifications you need to know in order to recognize a bona fide guru?," for decades now, hardly any have been able to give an accurate reply. At best, gave well intended speculations, but no factual knowledge of Prabhupada's instructions or quotes on this specific  matter.

Thus this page.

Currently folks are often unaware of Vedic qualifications required for diksa [initiating] guru. Here then, are some quotes about what to look for when selecting a Diksa guru. This list is not complete, as it never will be, BUT it is sufficient.

If a devotee becomes first class uttama, plus ordered [somehow or other] by Srila Prabhupada to be a diksa [initiating] guru, then there are qualifications which would automatically be there as proof that they are a qualified pure devotee diksa.

All of the following comes from instructions in our scripture, and from Srila Prabhupada himself. A first class Mahabhagavata devotee, the pure devotee, or a bona-fide diksa guru, must:

*  Must be above the bodily platform with ALL senses under control [For example, no anger when he doesn't get the maha plate]; and must be COMPLETELY free of sex desire. This is a tall order and one that must be achieved to accept the post of guru. They must even be free of “subtle” sex desire. That's important since history has revealed various guru's falling down with the opposite gender even on subtle levels.  One of many verses: "A sober person who can tolerate the urge to speak, the mind's demands, the actions of anger and the urges of the tongue, belly and genitals is qualified to make disciples all over the world." Nectar Of Instruction, Text 1  Full book found here for free.

* Guru always avoids the 10 offenses to the holy name, especially the first offense, which means they must be free of the propensity to criticize others or gossip.

* Is happy, jolly, never morose. Brahma-bhuta, or liberated from the material concept of life: "I and mine."

* Meek and humble. Guru has genuinely become the personification of third verse in Siksastakam, lower than a straw, yet more tolerant than a tree.

* Always speaks of Krishna. [And doesn't waste life airs speaking prajalpa.]

* A pure devotee is not recognized by popular social position, number of followers, ashram, or so forth - but by their attraction to the holy name.

* Has all qualities of a Brahmana: Honesty, cleanliness, etc. Simultaneously is above brahmana, or is Vaisnava - transcendental [yet follows properly, not misusing “transcendence” to do nonsense. Rather, sets the perfect example].

* Siksastakam is their life and soul, especially na dhanam, na jahnam, na sundarim, and so on - or no desire for profit, adoration and distinction [not showing off or trying to stand out in a crowd.]

* Is a maha-bhagavata, and those who see such a personality immediately think of or remember the holy names of Krishna.

* Must be situated on the topmost platform [beyond mechanics], a first class devotee:

"The guru must be situated on the topmost platform of devotional service. There are three classes of devotees, and the guru must be accepted from the topmost class. The first-class devotee is the spiritual master for all kinds of people. It is said, gurur nirnam. The word nirnam means "of all human beings." The guru is not limited to a particular group. It is stated in the Upadesamrita of Rüpa Gosvami that a guru is a gosvami, a controller of the senses AND the mind. Such a guru can accept disciples from all over the world. This is the test of the guru." ~ Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya 24.330, P

"When one has attained the topmost position of mahä-bhägavata, he is to be accepted as a guru and worshiped exactly like Hari, the Personality of Godhead. Only such a person is eligible to occupy the post of a guru." Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya 24.330P

* Must be above the six stages mentioned in Srila Vishvanatha Chakravarti Thakur's book Madhurya-Kadambini, the six stages of unsteady or anisthita stages of bhajana-kriya (activities of worship). The sixth stage is enjoying the facilities of bhakti, or playing in the waves of the ocean of bhakti, a position known as taranga-rangini. Careful not to be imitating, but sincerely on that platform.

*  To accept disciples one must have such great faith in their own guru that they are always in agreement with their guru, "never" questions/doubts their guru, does not try to philosophize "around" something their guru has instructed. And is always obedient to guru. [Remember, they all ready checked out their guru prior to accepting initiation, thus there should be no more doubt. Also, it’s not based on 'blind' faith, but on shasta, knowledge, etc.]

*  A PhD is not the least bit important. :) Nor does it make one a better choice of guru, nor is any high level of material education needed:

"My Guru Maharaja was very great scholar, and his Guru Maharaja, from literary point of view, he could not even sign his name, Gaura-kisora dasa Babaji Maharaja.  And Bhaktivinoda Thakura asked Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura to accept Gaura-kisora dasa Babaji Maharaja as his, as his spiritual master, that 'You go and take your initiation from Gaura-kisora dasa Babaji Maharaja.'  So he thought that 'I am a great scholar, and I am son of a magistrate, Bhaktivinoda Thakura, and great Vaisnava.  He'll be very much pleased to accept me.'  Of course, he was very much pleased.  But in the beginning he refused.  He refused.  Because... Of course, that is only show.  He was not proud.  Just to teach us.  Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati explained that 'I was little proud. So I was thrice refused by Guru Maharaja,' although he was the only disciple.  So the scholarship is not a qualification of becoming devotee.  That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's teaching.  Scholarship may help, but it is not necessary.  Real necessary is that one should be humble and meek and follow the instruction of the spiritual master.  This is real qualification." ~ Srila Prabhupada Lecture, 03/13/74, Vrindavan

*  And my all-time favorite is in the exalted status described in Caitanya-caritamrta Adi 1.46P (quote follows)...

"In his prayers to the spiritual master, Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura confirms that all the revealed scriptures accept the spiritual master to be identical with the Personality of Godhead because he is a very dear and confidential servant of the Lord. Gaudiya Vaisnavas therefore worship Srila Gurudeva (the spiritual master) in the light of his being the servitor of the Personality of Godhead. In all the ancient scriptures of devotional service and in the more recent songs of Srila Narottama dasa Thakura, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura and other unalloyed Vaisnavas, the spiritual master is always considered either one of the confidential associates of Srimati Radharani or a manifested representation of Srila Nityananda Prabhu." ~ Adi 1.46

*  Does not have the AMBITION to be diksa guru, or does not think they are qualified. This example is found in Srila Bhaktivinode's "Jaiva Dharma" where the babaji is a first class devotee, but when he is asked by the disciple to give diksa, he declines, saying he is not qualified to be a diksa guru.

"Unless one is a resident of Krishna Loka, one cannot be a Spiritual Master.  That is the first proposition.  A layman cannot be a Spiritual Master, and if he becomes so then he will simply create disturbance ... So to summarize the whole thing, it is to be understood that a bona fide Spiritual Master is a resident of Krishna Loka." ~ Srila Prabhupada Letter, June 10, 1969

* ETC. -- This is not a complete list, though the point are made sufficiently. :-)

SOME HELPFUL QUOTES:

"Yes. A spiritual master must have seen Kṛṣṇa. Without seeing, he cannot be spiritual master. But how Kṛṣṇa can be seen? Kṛṣṇa can be seen by love. Premāñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena [Bs. 5.38]. Premāñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santaḥ sadaiva hṛdayeṣu vilokayanti. Just like if you are in love with somebody, you can see him constantly—he is always on your eyes, anyone you love—so similarly, Kṛṣṇa also can be seen by development of love. Otherwise how we can see Kṛṣṇa? He is so great, unlimited. Your eyes, your senses, are all limited. You cannot see the unlimited by your limited sense perception. But you can see... Not you can see, but svayam eva sphuraty adaḥ. When you are developed in the sense of love of Godhead, then He reveals unto you. Therefore you can see. " - Srila prabhupada's Lecture : Bhagavad-gita 4.34-39 -- Los Angeles, January 12, 1969

"So this adhokṣajam, Kṛṣṇa, we have to worship. Adhokṣaja. So we cannot see if it is beyond our sense perception. How we can worship Him? Therefore you have to take shelter of the spiritual master who has seen Him." - Srila Prabhupada's Lecture : Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.2.25 -- Los Angeles, August 28, 1972

Woman Interviewer: But I mean supposing I wished to become an initiate. Wouldn't I have to come and live here?
Śyāmasundara: No.
Prabhupāda: Not necessarily.
Woman Interviewer: Oh, I could stay at home?
Prabhupāda: Oh, yes.
Woman Interviewer: What about work, though? Does one have to give up one's job?
Prabhupāda: You have to give up these bad habits and chant these beads, Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra. That's all.
Woman Interviewer: Would I have to give any financial support?
Prabhupāda: No, that's your voluntary wish. If you give us, that's all right. Otherwise, we don't mind.
Woman Interviewer: Sorry, I didn't understand.
Prabhupāda: We do not want, depend on anyone's financial contributions. We depend on God, or Kṛṣṇa.
Woman Interviewer: So I wouldn't have to give any money at all.
Prabhupāda: No.
Woman Interviewer: Is this one of the main things that distinguishes a genuine guru from a fake guru?
Prabhupāda: Yes. A genuine guru is not a business man."

VAISNAVA ETIQUETTE Part 2

For those who want to live the lifestyle of the initiate, more quotes and instructions from His Divine Grace. Srila Prabhupada has commented that anyone who actually lives as a Vaisnava, he will accept as his disciple. Of course, a person must have self-discipline and commitment. It is highly recommended to first read VAISNAVA ETIQUETTE Part 1 before reading this one, but that is each individuals choice of course.

From Prabhupada's pure translation of
Chaitanya Charitamrita, Antya Lila, 4, 132 &133, we read:
"If one transgresses the laws of etiquette, people make fun of him, and thus he is vanquished in both this world and the next." -- "By observing the etiquette, you have satisfied My mind. Who else but you will show this example?"

Further he explains:

apane acara keha na kare pracara
pracara karena keha na karena acara

“Some behave very well but do not preach the cult of Krishna consciousness, whereas others preach but do not behave properly. CC Antya 4.102

[It should be recognized that the time period when these books were translated, the dictionary definition of
the word cult meant "culture."]

acara pracara namera karaha dui karya
tumi sarva guru tumi jagatera arya

“You simultaneously perform both duties in relation to the holy name by your personal behavior and by your preaching. Therefore you are the spiritual master of the entire world, for you are the most advanced devotee in the world.” CC Antya 4.103

“Brahminical life means to be very, very clean, inside and out. Inside by chanting and hearing, and outside by bathing three times daily, if not possible at least two times, but never less than once. Bathing after passing stool. The qualifications of the brahamanas are described in the 18th Chapter of Bhagavat Gita verse 42: “Peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, wisdom, knowledge, and religiousness — these are the qualities by which the brahmanas work.” So see that these instructions are being followed nicely." ~SP Letter 12/7/75

"in the Skanda Purāṇa, which says, "Persons who are decorated with tilaka or gopī-candana [a kind of clay resembling fuller's earth which is produced in certain quarters of Vṛndāvana], and who mark their bodies all over with the holy names of the Lord, and on whose necks and breasts there are tulasī beads, are never approached by the Yamadūtas." The Yamadūtas are the constables of King Yama (the lord of death), who punishes all sinful men. Vaiṣṇavas are never called for by such constables of Yamarāja. In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, in the narration of Ajāmila's deliverance, it is said that Yamarāja gave clear instructions to his assistants not to approach the Vaiṣṇavas. Vaiṣṇavas are beyond the jurisdiction of Yamarāja's activities." ~ Nectar of Devotion [Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu], Chapter 9

"Yes, to call one another prabhu is all right, but not to become prabhu. To accept others as prabhu, and remain as servant is the idea. But, because somebody is calling you prabhu, one should not become a prabhu, and treat others as servants. In other words, everyone should feel himself as servant, and not think himself prabhu because he is being called prabhu. This will make the relationship congenial." ~ SP Letter to Himavati Devi Dasi, June 14, 1968

“It is nice that you are doing preaching work there, but you should know that such practices like stealing are against the principles of Krishna consciousness. I always want that my students should be very ideal in character and not discredit our society.” SP Letter (10/28/68)

“I have received one complaint from an Indian devotee at Mayapur, Prabharupa Das Brahmacary, that he is maltreated by our American devotees. Kindly inquire into this matter and do the needful. Either Indian or foreign whoever joins us they are not under any obligation, our only tie is Love of Godhead. It should be our definite policy that nobody is ill-treated that he may go away. We recruit a person to join us after spending gallons of blood. Everyone comes for reformation, you cannot expect everyone to be perfect, and rather it is our duty to make everyone perfect as far as possible. So we shall be very much cautious and careful in this connection.” ~ SP Letter - 8/23/73

Chaitanya Caritamrita, Madhya Lila 24.324-345

"Folding his hands, Sanatana Goswami said, “My Lord, You ordered me to write a directory about the activities of Vaishnava."
"

“I am a most lowborn person. I have no knowledge of good behavior. How is it possible for me to write authorized directions about Vaishanva activities?”

"SanatanaGosvami then requested the Lord, 'Please personally tell me how I can write this difficult book about Vaishnava behavior. Please manifest yourself in my heart.

"If you would please manifest yourself within my heart and personally direct me in writing this book, then, although I am lowborn, I may hope to be able to write it. You can do this becauseyou are the Supreme Personality of Godhead Yourself and whatever youdirect is perfect.”

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu replied, “Whatever you want to do you willbe able to do correctly by Lord Krishna’s favor. He will manifest the real purport.
"Because you asked me for a synopsis, please hear these few indications. In the beginning one must take shelter of a bona fide spiritual master."

"In your book there should be the characteristics of the bona fide guru and the bona fide disciple. Then, before accepting aspiritual master, one can be assured of the spiritual master’sposition. Similarly, the spiritual master can also be assured of thedisciple’s position. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, should be described as the worshipable object, and you should considerthe (bija) mantra for the worship of Krishna, Rama, or any otherexpansion of the Supreme Personality of Godhead."

“You should discuss the qualifications necessary for receiving a mantra, the perfection of the mantra, the purification of the mantra, initiation, morning duties, remembrance of the Supreme Lord, cleanliness, and washing the mouth and other parts of the body."

"In the morning, one should regularly brush his teeth, take his bath, and offer prayers to the Lord and offer obeisances to the spiritual master. One should render service to the spiritual master and paint one’s body in twelve places with urdhva pundra [tilaka]. One should stamp the holy names of the Lord on his body, or one should stamp the symbols of the Lord, such as the disc and club."

“After this, you should describe how one should decorate his body with gopicandana, wear neck beads, collect tulasi leaves from the tulasi tree, cleanse his cloth and the altar, cleanse one’s own house or apartment and go to the temple and ring the bell just to draw the attention of Lord Krishna.”

"Also describe the Deity worship, wherein one should offer food to Krishna at least five times daily. One should indue time place Krishna on a bed. You should also describe the process for offering arati and the worship of the Lord according to the list of five, sixteen or fifty ingredients.

“The characteristics of the Deities should be discussed as well as the characteristics of the salagrama sila. One should also discuss visiting the Deities in the temple and touring holy places like Vrindavana, Mathura, and Dvaraka."

“You should glorify the Holy Name and carefully give up offenses when chanting the Holy Name. One should know the symptoms of a Vaishnava. One must give up or nullify all kinds of seva-aparadha,offenses in Deity worship."

“The items of worship, such as water, conchshell, flowers, incense and lamp should be described. You should also mention chanting softly, offering prayers, circumambulating, and offering obeisances. All these should be carefully studied."

“Other items to be considered are the method of performing purascarana (purification), taking Krishna-prasada, giving up unofferedfood and not blaspheming the Lord’s devotees.”

“One should know the symptoms of a devotee and how to associate with devotees. One should know how to satisfy the devotee by rendering services, and one should know how to give up the association of nondevotees. One should also regularly hear the recitation ofSrimad-Bhagavatam.”

“You should describe the ritualistic duties of every day, and you should describe the fortnightly duties – especially observing Ekadasi fast, which comes every fortnight.”

“You should recommend the avoidance of mixed Ekadasi and the performance of pure Ekadasi. You should also describe the fault in not observing this. One should be very careful as far as these items are concerned. If one is not careful, one will be negligent in executing devotional service.”

“Whatever you say about Vaishnava behavior, the establishment of Vaishnava temples and Deities and everything else should be supported by evidence from the Puranas."
"You should give general and specific descriptions of the behavior and activities of a Vaishnava. You should outline things that are to be done and things that are not to be done. All this should be described as regulations and etiquettes.”

"I have thus given a synopsis of the Vaishnava regulative principles. I have given this in brief just to give you a little direction. When you write on this subject, Krishna will help you by spiritually awakening you."

"If we are really Krsna conscious, then our business is to repeat the words of Krsna. That's all. What is the difference between a Krsna's representative and non-representative? The representative of Krsna will simply repeat what Krsna says. That's all."- Srila Prabhupada, Bhagavad-gita 1.20 , London, 07/17/73

“Yes, a new man may commit blunders in the beginning, but that does not mean we may be too impatient with him. After all, training means the man does not know, so you should train him nicely. A Vaishnava is expected to be humbler than the blade of grass, so when you train some new man you should not get agitated with him. After all, we are preachers, and we do not expect our audience or candidates completely respondent to our call. If everyone is trained [already] then what is the use of our preaching?” ~ SP Letter to Upendra 3/11/69

“One thing you may note also as a matter of etiquette. The Spiritual Master is addressed as His Divine Grace, a Godbrother is addressed as His Grace, and any sannyasi is addressed as His Holiness.” (SP letter to Rayarama 91/30/67)

“It doesn’t matter what we are, grhasthas or sannyasis, the point is to be paramahamsa, completely surrendered to Lord Krishna.” SP Letter to Upendra 8/4/70

"Regarding general state of affairs at Amsterdam temple, I can understand there is some disturbance among you, but that is not to be taken very seriously. Real business is preaching work. And if there is full attention on this matter only, all other businesses will be automatically successful. Fighting amongst ourselves is not at all good, but if our preaching work is neglected, or if we fall down in following the regulative principles — such as rising before four, chanting 16 rounds, like that — if these things are not strictly observed, then Maya will enter and spoil everything. So my best advice to you is to strictly observe these things yourself and be the example so that all others may follow. We should not criticize each other as Vaishnavas, because there is fault in everyone and we may be ourselves subject to criticism. Best thing is to be above suspicion ourselves, and then if we see discrepancies and make suggestions, the others will automatically respect and take action to rectify the matters. Otherwise the whole thing is doomed if we simply go on fighting over some small thing. So try to organize things and preach together in this spirit and that will please me very very much.” ~ SP Letter to Madhumangala (11/18/72)

"Just like these boys and girls, they were adhīra. Now they are dhīra. Adhīra. Adhīra means without any responsibility, doing all nonsense. Actually they are rich nation's sons and daughters. They are doing ev..., but now they have become dhīra. "No illicit sex, no meat-eating, no intoxication, no gambling. Yes, sir." This is dhīra. You are already intoxicated. You are already illusioned in this material world. If you still go on drinking, where is the possibility of knowledge? You must have sober brain to understand. So this is going on. Therefore my appeal to all the sober men: to understand this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement and join it for the benefit of his personal self, for the benefit of his country, for the benefit of the whole human society." ~ SP lecture, Delhi India, 11-10-73
“Regarding some misbehavior, that we have to check by training peacefully. Your attitude of tolerance and kindness is very nice, so train them in this way.” ~ SP Letter to Bhavananda 10/28/70

"Our chanting is the medicine and our prasadam is the diet for curing material disease.” (SP letter to Dayananda 68/10/37)

"According to Vedic principles, the wife of another man is considered one's mother, and sexual relations are strictly forbidden with one's mother, sister and daughter. If one indulges in illicit sexual relations with another man's wife, that activity is considered identical with having sex with one's mother. This act is most sinful. The same principle holds for a woman also; if she enjoys sex with a man other than her husband, the act is tantamount to having sexual relations with her father or son. Illicit sex life is always forbidden, and any man or woman who indulges in it is punished in the manner described in this verse." ~ Srimad Bhagavatam 5.26.20

[
In addition to chanting 16 rounds daily, Prabhupada's requirement for the initiated disciple is no illicit sex life, no intoxication, no meat eating, & no gambling. These 4 are known as 'regulative principles.' They're purpose is to elevate us above animal propensities so we can better understand, & advance, in transcendental qualities of Krishna Consciousness.]
“Your humble repentance is just like a Vaishnava student, so I thank you very much for this humbleness. Lord Chaitanya taught us to be humbler that the grass on the street and more tolerant that the tree. So these symptoms are Vaishnava symptoms.” ~
SP Letter to Gargamuni 2/5/69

[NOTE: This must be used properly, by both involved. No one should think it opens the door to offend another, then chastise the other if they do not respond as described. Nor does the recipient tolerate more than they can realistically tolerate. Both can be a cause of falldown. However, to start developing honest levels, would be good. Krishna Consciousness is about 'self' purification, not focusing on where others need purifying. Of course, associate with those who follow properly, but focus on purifying self. When we become very 'absorbed' & busy in activities with Krishna, like the parent always taking care of their child doesn't have much time or interest to get terribly angry, dovetailing it in service to God can be a way out of such difficulties. As long as we do not hand over power of our life to another. Bhakti Yoga means self control. Only let those in, who won't try to take that away & blame God.]

“All should offer due respect to a sannyasi. His position is always superior to all other inmates of the temple. He must always maintain that superior position by action and behavior.” ~
SP Letter to Sudama 7/29/72 Respect for sannyasi

[NOTE: Since early on, we've seen sanyasis fall down in different ways. How then, are regular devotees to act? If the sanyasi is still wearing saffron, caring dunda, & sincerely endeavoring, I myself will not risk an offense. I will bow, will offer all respects. It is to their soul & to Paramatma. Now, this is not to make falldowns acceptable, simply those in positions of power are the ones who should take responsibility & deal with that aspect. Our aspect is to protect our spiritual creeper. Prabhupada did give the instruction to stop giving sanyasi initiation because it's too hard for kali yuga devotees to maintain. But that too, is not really our business -its theirs. Just, good to know. Trying to control those we have no power over, will only increase lowering of our own consciousness. How to act? If even we respect an ant, why not respect a fallen devotee? Then avoid associating.]
“This Krishna consciousness movement through music, philosophy, spiritual culture, and personal behavior culminating in ideal character of the devotees. All these heavenly contributions combined together will certainly bring about a major change in the life of Western people.” SP Letter to Shivananda (9/14/68)

“Regarding your second question about greeting karmis, if a karmi is a friend, you just greet him HareKrishna, and with folded hands touch your forehead. If the karmi is a superior relative, then chant Hare Krishna and bow down to him on the ground. That should be the etiquette in our society transactions.” SP Letter to Arundhati 6/16/69

“The daily regulative duties must be performed by everyone very strictly: the beads chanted sixteen rounds, and our literatures read and discussed. In this way, everything should be done very nicely. Sankirtan should be done by you in the streets and at gatherings and in this manner display what is this Krishna Consciousness movement and how it is for everyone’s eternal welfare and happiness. So you do all these with great enthusiasm and very carefully. Our all activities must be open so that no one may criticize our mission. So all dealings must be to the standard of Vaishnavism. We cannot misrepresent ourselves for the purpose of taking monies from the public, but as everything is undertaken forthrightly in a Krishna Consciousness way, then Lord Krishna will be pleased to provide all facilities for aiding our sincere service.” ~ Letter to Sridama 7/8/70

“If you have any specific grievance, please let me know but don’t but don’t be disturbed by any sort of disagreement with your Godbrothers and Godsisters. Each and every living entity is an individual soul and as such disagreement is quite possible in our dealings with one another. But we have to consider the central point of interest. You are both very intelligent and sober girls and I have got good estimation of you; do not take at any time an attitude of non-cooperation because you have not agreed with another’s point of view.” SP Letter to Yamuna Devi & Harsharani 1/15/68 “Anyway, do things in good sense, without any disturbance. We have to make progress very soberly, and I am always at your service when ever required.” SP Letter to Satsvarupa (8/19/69)
"Every man should act like this: when he meets a person more qualified than himself, he should be very pleased; when he meets someone less qualified than himself, he should be compassionate toward him; and when he meets someone equal to himself, he should make friendship with him. In this way one is never affected by the threefold miseries of this material world."

PURPORT

Generally when we find someone more qualified than ourselves, we become envious of him; when we find someone less qualified, we deride him; and when we find someone equal we become very proud of our activities. These are the causes of all material tribulations. The great sage Nārada therefore advised that a devotee should act perfectly. Instead of being envious of a more qualified man, one should be jolly to receive him. Instead of being oppressive to a less qualified man, one should be compassionate toward him just to raise him to the proper standard. And when one meets an equal, instead of being proud of one's own activities before him, one should treat him as a friend. One should also have compassion for the people in general, who are suffering due to forgetfulness of Kṛṣṇa. These important functions will make one happy within this material world."
